This was disappointing, although not more than I expected. The female is much more wary than the male, and one seldom gets greater than a glimpse of her as she bounds from bush to bush. I caught sight of what I took to be the male, and that i may additionally hear the feminine replying to his name at no great distance. The male, too, exhibits no rufous patches in conjunction with the breast. On the other side of this was a mixed development of samphire and salt-bush, with just a few lifeless or dying bushes of assorted species. One was in a salt-bush, the opposite in tea-tree scrub. I can not recollect ever seeing it perch in a bush, and even in tea-tree scrub, though the latter is plentiful enough around sure of its haunts. They appear to spend most of their time busily searching the samphires or salt-bush for insect life as they flit from bush to bush, and because the observer moves towards them they're quite cautious, and, not like other species of Acanthiza, will not permit of a near approach. I used to be weary. I resolved to go away and return in an hour's time, and as the ground was sandy I might try to steal silently as much as the bush, and, if potential, surprise the sitting bird, and procure it earlier than it may slip away. |
